“It’s a time jump,” exec producer Julie Plec tells EW. ”Summer has passed in which poor Stefan has been suffering at the bottom of the quarry and Damon and Elena have been having hot lovin’ sex.”

Though the premiere will pick up with move-in day at college (yes, they’re actually enrolling!), Plec promises fans will get to see some of the steamy action that went down over break.

Instead of debuting in its Tuesday time slot, The Originals will now receive the plum post-Vampire Diaries slot on Oct. 3 — an attempt by the network to give the spinoff series more exposure following its flagship drama. The Originals will make its Tuesday time period debut Oct. 8 at 8 p.m., when it will go up against ABC’s anticipated Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.

This means that Vampire Diaries debuts one week earlier than originally anticipated, while Reign — which will air Thursdays at 9 p.m. — will launch Oct. 17, a week later. An encore of the second episode of The Originals will air Oct. 10 following Vampire Diaries. Read more at The Hollywood Reporter
